Water quality in three potential drought refuges in an arid-land river: assessing habitat suitability for at-risk fish species

چکیده

Drought is a common disturbance in arid-land streams and rivers. The survival of aquatic species depends on access to refuge habitats where water quality remains high. Over the past century, modified flow regimes altered watershed instream characteristics have led extinction endangerment numerous fish endemic southwestern United States. We assessed potential drought refuges Middle Rio Grande (MRG), with an emphasis suitability for endangered Silvery Minnow (RGSM). examined three types refuges: agricultural return drain outfalls; isolated pools that remained during streamflow intermittency; reach perennial below diversion dam. All are known contain RGSM other fishes. Two out outfalls, one pools, ten kilometers perennially wetted stream dam met basic criteria necessary support populations. These findings suggest habitability context dependent, generalizations regarding specific type should be avoided, careful assessment required determine if location will assemblages. Although some areas may water, they represent ecological traps exposed poor conditions compared habitats.

Habitat suitability modeling for wild goat (Capra aegagrus) in a mountainous arid area, central Iran

Wild goat (Capra aegagrus) is one of the most prominent mountain mammals dispersed in many habitats in Iran. However, few studies on the relationship between this species and its habitat have been conducted. This species is recognized as one of the main food source for highly endangered species such as cheetah and leopard. In this study which lasted from fall 2009 through summer 2011, seasona...

Assessing habitat-suitability models with a virtual species

This paper compares two habitat-suitability assessing methods, the Ecological Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA) and the Generalised Linear Model (GLM), to see how well they cope with three different scenarios. The main difference between these two analyses is that GLM is based on species presence/absence data while ENFA on presence data only. A virtual species was created and then dispatched in a ge...

Uncertainty in Various Habitat Suitability Models and Its Impact on Habitat Suitability Estimates for Fish

Species distribution models (SDMs) are extensively used to project habitat suitability of species in stream ecological studies. Owing to complex sources of uncertainty, such models may yield projections with varying degrees of uncertainty. To better understand projected spatial distributions and the variability between habitat suitability projections, this study uses five SDMs that are based on...

Heavy Metals Concentrations and Human Health Risk Assessment for Three Common Species of Fish from Karkheh River, Iran

Background: The concentrations of heavy metals in the tissues and organs of fishes indicate the concentrations of heavy metals in water and their accumulation in food chains. In the present study, the concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, V and Pb in three common species of fish and the potential health risks to local residents via consumption of the fishes were estimated.  Methods: The con...
